About the festival 2021

"Music and Dance from Film Reels"

Due to the new situation, The Folklore Festival Východná 2021 will have a new form: It will take place in the online space in combination with television and radio broadcasting. Audiovisual and audio recordings of traditional cultural expressions have a tradition of more than a century. They consist of film, documentaries and series, records of field research, but records of programs of folklore festivals and competitions too.

This year is the anniversary of several such films and series. In 1921, the first Slovak television film by J. Siakeľ "Jánošík" was made. In 1951, began the preparation of a series of documentary records of folk dance and music "Slovak folk dances" by F. Poloczek. Between 1965 and 1966, Czechoslovak Television brought the series "The Earth Sings", which recorded dancing, singing and instrumental speeches from every corner of Slovakia. In 2001, the first of a ten-part series of recordings of the dance-music tradition was created within the project of the National Cultural Centre (Národné osvetové centrum) and The Institute of Musicology of Slovak Academy of Sciences (Ústav hudobnej vedy Slovenskej Akadémie Vied) with the name "Ľudové tance slovenských regiónov" (The Folk Dances of Slovak Regions).

Rescue research of dance and music traditions is currently the subject of several documentary projects and records of programs of folklore competitions, festivals and shows are systematically realized.

Older film and sound recordings of traditional dance, music, song, art and dramatics performance are reflections of the old world for teachers, choreographers, directors and set designers for today. They are material not only for research but also for teaching performers in the environment of the folklore movement. They form a wide field of themes and means of expression for the creators of stage works.

And for the audience, it is often the inspiration for this unknown world, who they see at festivals in the 21st century.

We believe that for all of us in this special period, they will be a charismatic witness to the past, a reflection of the reality of our ancestors lived in better and worse times.

The Folklore Festival Východná 2021 will introduce us to this process of inspiration and use of archival material within the programs. At the same time, they will acquaint us with the traditional manifestations of the village of Východná in Upper Liptov itself, whose rich culture in the lively "people-anthill" of the annual festival may sometimes escape our eyes...
